  • Australian television writer and director (known for Matlock Police(1971), Hunter (1967) and Homicide (1964)) and an author specialising in the history of notorious outlaw Ned Kelly and his gang.
  • The Age wrote: Mr Jones, who died in Melbourne on Friday aged 86, wrote the book Ned Kelly: A Short Life, in 1995, regarded as the definitive biography about the famous outlaw. With his late wife Bronwyn Binns he co-created the Kelly mini-series The Last Outlaw(1980) and the landmark convict drama Against the Wind (1978). Jones also co-wrote the 1970 movie Ned Kelly, which starred Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, and wrote the 1987 World War I movie The Lighthorsemen.

Co–writer of the movie Breaker Morant for which he received an Oscar nomination. Directed the Emmy Award winning mini-series A Town Like Alice. Author of the play The Sum of Us, and subsequently the award-winning screenplay.
